Immediate Release: DRAFT Oswego
County Sportsmen Groups and Local Business
Through a grant received by the Oswego County Sportsmen’s Foundation,
from the parent company of the James A FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant, Entergy,
a donation from the Salmon River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation,
and the cooperative efforts of the Oswego County Federation of Sportsmen’s
Club’s membership, the Region 7
DEC Bureau of Wildlife are now the owners of a Bobcat brush mower attachment.
This brushcat give the DEC Operations Department
a better ability to control evasive plant species and manage early
successional grass lands and brush land habitat Mike Putnam, Region 7, Wildlife Biologist, had the following to say; I
will start out by saying that we (DEC) truly appreciate all of
the hard work that you and others within the Oswego County Sportsman Foundation and
those from the Salmon River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation have
put forth in the procurement of the Bobcat brushcat mower attachment that was
recently donated to the Region 7 Bureau of Wildlife. The brushcat
will be used for combating both native and non-native invasive plant
species and maintenance of early successional habitats on our wildlife
management areas (WMAs). Initially, we will focus the use of the brushcat
at Deer Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area (DCM) where it will be used to
treat invasive plant species such as, honeysuckle, Japanese barberry, and
European buckthorn, to name a few. We are also excited about the use of
the brushcat for early successional habitat management along riparian
zones, wetland margins, and upland areas, for coppicing purposes and for
removal of native invasive plant species like red maple. Once
work is completed at DCM, the brushcat will be deployed to other WMAs
within Region 7, where its use will be the same as those at DCM. Thanks
again for all of your efforts and I hope that you and others will enjoy the
future benefits that will come from the use of this equipment.
The original grant awarded to the Oswego County Sportsmen’s Foundation
was for Evasive Plant Species Control at Deer Creek Marsh in Oswego County.
When the Brushcat attachment purchase was suggested and it was seen that
it could benefit more than Deer Creek Marsh the Sportsmen’s Foundation
contacted Entergy and obtained permission to modify the original grant.
Additional funding that was required for the purchase was obtained
through the efforts of local NWTF Representative Bill Wilbur and the Salmon
River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation.
Jennifer Quezergue The Oswego County Sportsmen’s Foundation a newly formed non profit (2007) did an extensive amount of work to see this project completed.
